urb@exp Final Project Conference and Project Meeting

08 June 2017

Towards new forms of urban governance and city development - learning from urban experiments with Living Labs & City Labs

An interactive event for urban policymakers, lab practitioners and the scientific community hosted by the City of Graz and the University of Graz.

European cities face complex economic, social and environmental challenges. To address these challenges, cities seek new approaches. A currently popular approach is urban labs (Living Labs and City Labs), in which local governments engage in solving problems together with other stakeholders in urban development. However, clear guidelines are needed concerning types of problems for which urban labs are most suited and how urban labs can best be organized and integrated into formal local government organisations. The URB@Exp project aimed at developing such guidelines by reviewing experiences of urban labs, and conducting action research in urban labs in five European cities.

The URB@Exp Final Project Conference engages urban researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders to rethink current challenges to urban labs in the light of URB@Exp project results. We present the LABkit for future urban lab practitioners and a booklet with guidelines on urban labs. We invite you to reflect with us on three years of transdisciplinary co-creation of new approaches to urban governance and to discuss future challenges and research agendas.

The actual conference takes place on June 8th 2017 and aims at presenting and discussing the project’s findings in interactive workshop sessions and panels with the renowned practitioner Remko Berkhout and professor James Evans, an academic expert on smart cities and urban sustainability. On the day before, we offer the opportunity to participate in a field trip to innovative urban development projects in the City of Graz.
