An interactive event for urban policymakers, lab practitioners and the scientific community hosted by the City of Graz and the University of Graz.

European cities face complex economic, social and environmental challenges. To address these challenges, cities seek new approaches. A currently popular approach is urban labs (Living Labs and City Labs), in which local governments engage in solving problems together with other stakeholders in urban development. However, clear guidelines are needed concerning types of problems for which urban labs are most suited and how urban labs can best be organized and integrated into formal local government organisations. The URB@Exp project aimed at developing such guidelines by reviewing experiences of urban labs, and conducting action research in urban labs in five European cities.

The URB@Exp Final Project Conference engages urban researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders to rethink current challenges to urban labs in the light of URB@Exp project results. We present the LABkit for future urban lab practitioners and a booklet with guidelines on urban labs. We invite you to reflect with us on three years of transdisciplinary co-creation of new approaches to urban governance and to discuss future challenges and research agendas.

The actual conference takes place on June 8th 2017 and aims at presenting and discussing the project’s findings in interactive workshop sessions and panels with the renowned practitioner Remko Berkhout and professor James Evans, an academic expert on smart cities and urban sustainability. On the day before, we offer the opportunity to participate in a field trip to innovative urban development projects in the City of Graz.

Urb@Exp is funded by the Joint Programme Initiative Urban Europe and brings together four academic institutes, one consultancy and five city partners to learn from the governance experiments of urban labs in Maastricht, Malmö, Graz, Leoben and Antwerp.

As part of this project metting, 25 representatives of the different partners visited several experimental projects in Malmö, inlcuding STPLN, a vibrant makers-space in the former port area. The city exchange day was followed by an interactive day of workshops structuring the coming action research in the five cities.

<![CDATA[Kick-off Meeting]]> http://www.urbanexp.eu/events///article/kick-off-meeting From September 10-12, the international Urb@Exp research project held a kick-off meeting with all partners at the International Centre for integrated assessment and Sustainable development of Maastricht University. Urb@Exp received funding for 3 years from the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe and establishes an intense collaboration between Maastricht University, Lund University, Malmö University and Graz University, city partners from Maastricht, Antwerp, Malmö, Graz and Leoben, and the consultancy Pantopicon.

Under the leadership of Prof. René Kemp from Maastricht University, the project will examine urban experiments with ongoing living and city labs to evaluate, conceptualize and improve new forms of urban governance and city development. Dr. Christian Scholl (ICIS) coordinates the project on behalf of the consortium. Dr. Joop de Kraker and Dr. Ron Cörvers (both ICIS) are also participants in the project.

During the meeting all partners discussed the research agenda and presented their contribution to the project. Upon arrival, they received a warm reception by the Alderman in the Town Hall of Maastricht. The next Urb@Exp meeting will take place in Malmö in March 2015. Soon, a website will inform all interested scholars and urban practitioners on the process and the results of this project.
